Quotation

Buddha was asked: ”what have you gained from meditation?”
He replied: “Nothing! However let me tell you what I have lost: anger, anxiety, depression, insecurity, fear of old age and death.”

What/Who is Buddha?

The title of Buddha (Sanskrit term: “awakened buddha”), refers to a person who achieves enlightenment especially by his wisdom. He attains the nirvana (which is the philosophical concept of Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism that means “extinction” of the fire of passions, ignorance or “liberation”). It can be designated by other qualifiers such as: “The enlightened one”, “The awakened one” or “The knowing one”. The name can therefore refer to several people. The most famous Buddha remains the founder of Buddhism: Siddhārtha Gautama, the archetype of “pure and perfect Buddha”.

The Palis distinguishes three ways to enlightenment

  • Srāvakabuddha (listener): He attained nirvāņa through the teaching of a Buddha. He is more often called arhat and is not always considered as a Buddha.
  • Pratyekabuddha (Solitary Buddha): He has found the way by himself but does not have the ability to liberate other beings.
  • Samyaksambuddha (pure and perfect Buddha): He has attained pure and perfect enlightenment by himself and has the ability to teach Dharma.

It is this last category that most often refers to the term of Buddha. The most famous example is the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni, but other samyaksambuddha are recognized and praised. Once he achieves his nirvana, he is freed from all ties but can still be affected by illness or poisoning. Some texts evoke the almost invulnerability of the perfect Buddha. This is the result of the fact that he has evacuated his bad karma, in particular by sacrificing parts of his body, even his life, in the course of many lives.

Siddhārtha Gautama: The First Buddha

Siddhārtha Gautama (the one designed on the Meditation & Buddha T-shirt), also known as Shakyamuni (“sage of Śākyas”) or Buddha (“awakened”), lives in the 6th century BC or the 5th century BC. He is the historical founder of a community of wandering monks who gives birth to Buddhism. Siddhārtha Gautama is born in Lumbini, a city located in present-day Nepal. He is the sovereign of the Śākyas belonging to the caste of warriors and administrators and is active in the states of Kosala and Magadha in the north-east of present-day India. He lived for about eighty years, but the various traditions disagree on the exact dates of birth and death. Modern researches have found them to be much later than anticipated at first:

  • around 623-543 BC according to the Theravada tradition
  • towards 563-483 BC according to the majority of specialists of the early twentieth century.

Many specialists in the early twenty-first century consider a parinirvāṇa (death of the Buddha) between 420 and 380 BC. All Buddhist currents view him as the “pure and perfect Buddha” of our era. He has not only attained enlightenment but is also able to spread Buddhist teaching around the world. His teaching is transmitted orally for three to four centuries before being written in the texts of the Pali canon.
